Gauchos serve up victory for Hughes

First-year volleyball coach Brian Hughes wanted nothing more than to start out his Saddleback coaching career on the right foot.  That happened Wednesday night as his Gauchos were able to turn back the Southwestern College Jaguars in four sets.

Saddleback jumped out quickly in the first set and cruised to a 25-16 victory then got caught in a see-saw battle in the second set, tied at 20-20.  Sophomore setter Kelley Hill then served out five straight points to give the Gauchos a win in the second set, 25-20.

The Gauchos saw an 8-5 lead in the third set vanish as they gave up eight consecutive points, trying numerous strategies to get a sideout.  The sideout didn't last long as the Gauchos conceded eight more points before rallying for five points behind the strong serving of Mariah Miller.

The fourth set was all Saddleback as sophomore Allison Pina served up five points to give Saddleback a 13-7 advantage and then Hill put the game out of reach when the team rallied behind her strong serving for five more points as Saddleback cruised on to a 25-12 victory to win the match.

Saddleback (1-0) will travel to Las Vegas for the College of Southern Nevada tournament over the weekend and return home to host a four-team quad tournament on Friday, September 11, starting at 2:00 p.m. in the campus gym.
